This brings a whole new dimension to calling yourself a Secular Humanist.

It’s great to see the pope occasionally acting like a humanist, even if he is very much not secular, lol.

What an honor, to be present for the inception of the legendary butlerian jihad, as foretold by our dear prophet frank herbert. We shall await the coming of shai hulud

Kind of funny that the pope, representative of the traditional Christian values, is now considered a radical left wing woke. Didn’t had that on my bingo card.

I mean, I suppose there would be nothing stopping the Pope from issuing a decree that LLMs are violations of all sorts of religious principles.

First, it could be viewed as a form of Idol Worship, a modern day Tower of Babel. The AI zealots are literally trying to summon a benevolent deity. That’s Pride. That’s Blasphemy. It’s literally playing God. Whatever god these AI zealots hope to create must be below the power of the One True God. Yet they seek to worship it. They seek to depend on it for sustenance, for wisdom, for guidance. They want to turn their entire existence over to a machine. They want to worship it. Instead of worshiping God, they seek to bow down before their own golden calf.

Or you could view it as an act of black magic. LLMs are trained off the corpus of human knowledge; they’re trying to speak a deity into being. That sounds like literal witchcraft, a mockery of God’s Creation of Man. Or Hell, the Vatican believes in the literal Devil and literal demons. When we pass our reasoning onto these machines, do we not make ourselves vulnerable to demonic intervention? Who’s to say ol’ Beelzebub isn’t back there tinkering with your model weights, corrupting your agents so that they will lead to malevolent results?

Maybe that’s why LLMs hallucinate so much, and why the whole conclusion of the AI alignment field seems to be “we’re fucked if we actually manage to create a real superhuman AGI.” Maybe it turns out that human beings actually can create a true intelligence. What we cannot do is create one that isn’t evil. Only the hand of the Divine has enough subtlety to craft a mind that is both intelligent as humans and also not irredeemably evil. To have an intelligence without evil, one must have a soul. And only God can create those. Any AGI must be a literal soulless monster. Any act of creating one an spitting in the eyes of God. There are some lines we were just never meant to cross.
