And if you have an eyepatch, a parrot on your shoulder, and a wooden leg; Yandex (Russia’s google) can be very helpful.

Do not pay for a search engine, period. Unless you are saying you are buying a raspberry pi and start self hosting searXNG.

May I ask why? You are paying a US company for something you can do for pennies on the dollar if you run searXNG. SearXNG does not collect and store your data anywhere other than on the place you are hosting it, so only you can see it unless you turn that off. There is so much more you can do with searXNG.

Is this (Good Search) what you’re talking about?

      • Non-profit
      • Seems to use Brave:

The search results are currently provided by Brave, based on a search index created from scratch. We have developed other components such as widgets, browser extensions and mobile apps ourselves or together with partners – often on the basis of open source applications.

In the future, we plan to integrate further independent search indices and develop features that will further expand our position as a sustainable search engine without advertising.

      • Lots of env do-good stuff, little search tech related, which is expected if they outsource search results. I’d like to be able to pay for non-profit that develops an independent search database.

I’ve recently spun a SearXNG server, and overall I’ve been quite impressed. Obviously, Google is not one of the sources.

This is the way, but I do have google as one of the sources, maybe I should look at turning that off? I was born in the late 80’s so I know how bad search engines can be until Google came along so I just kept the Google as one of the sources.

Just turn it off and give it a try. Nothing to lose. You will give more space for results from other engines with more organic stuff, instead of seo manipulating and ai stuff

Quitting google search is incredibly easy. Just change the default in your browser.

I’ve been using DDG for years… I used to fall back on google occasionally if DDG didn’t find what I wanted, but now google is shit so I don’t even do that.

Quitting the Google is incredibly easy, all you need to do is spin up the docker image of searXNG and set it up you mean. Screw US big tech!

But remember to configure it to not use google when searching, or you will have a lot of effort to still use google i the end ;)
