This is the part that the “walled garden” arguments I see conveniently ignores so often. Humble games and key reselling, good and bad, exist because of this rule. That 30% otherwise covers Steam dealing with sales, key distribution, payment providers, and all the legal liabilities that comes with that for you. Unless you can securely and continuously run your own shopfront below that 30% margin, there’s not a whole lot of incentive to do so… But Steam isn’t stopping anyone, not even Epic in fact. The so-called wall is like a foot high.

The DRM isn’t even that deep either and has known tools to remove it if you want. It exists as a bare minimum requirement for copyright law and Steam friends but not much else, hence why publishers often use things like Denuvo still.

We don’t ‘defend’ Valve’s monopoly so much as they really aren’t doing anything special to maintain it besides making Steam libraries accessible on more hardware. They compete by merely existing in the same space.

Thiis article is doing some real mental gymnastics to come up with this BS conclusion. The reason is because the city infrastructure planning is so atrocious that our government keeps building tunnels and bypasses to avoid it like the fucking plague. On top of that, even when you do have to drive into the inner city, parking fees are extortionarely high under threat of towing or heavy fines. I would rather take a 50c train in and walk half the city any day than waste overpriced fuel dealing with that shit.

PS: The residential parking requirement was because the housing bubble is cramming more families into shoebox homes with nowhere to park. Would not be surprised if there were property investors backing tthe study.

As much as I wholeheartedly agree that human creativity should always be protected and LLMs don’t meet that standard, the legal enforcement of said copyrights on a blackbox of slop is nigh impossible without regulatory transparency on how it was built, which AI companies will lobby against until the end of time. It would be like finding your needle in a trillion haystacks of stolen needles you’re not allowed to even see.

Fix the data laundering and the copyright issue fixes itself.

I’ve always interpreted the whole LLM ‘training’ as unregulated data laundering at industrial scale. Companies will steal content from across the world, trade it in backroom deals, and then wash it in their data centers, before regurgitating it to the masses.

As long as the exact portions of stolen data used is considered ‘trade secret’ under NDA, the copyrights are conveniently too scrambled to prove or enforce. Even if the LLM spat it out near verbatim, they will always argue it came to the same conclusion on its own because you could never prove their sources otherwise.

This is why that, independent of its city sized power demands and rampant spread of misinformation, there will never be an ethical place for LLMs by their inherent design.

Amazon eBook formats have DRM that encrypts it to you and your Kindle’s unique device ID and they can just stop reissuing, or revoke the decryption keys. They make it extraordinarily difficult to export/download them in a DRM-free format that would otherwise be unaffected.

Funnily enough I’m an under-employed software engineer hired as a cleanup crew for sprawling tech debt partially caused by AI dependence. My colleagues are sick of it but have to keep generating slop to meet KPIs demanded of us to artificially justify the company expenditure on the failing technology.

I don’t think programming will be dead forever but rather there will be decades worth of soul crushing techdebt to fix across multiple industries, with the brain drain screwing over vibe coders after the impending AI economic collapse.

All I can do in the mean time is bide my time and play the long game, focusing on diagnosing and fixing things I know the AI fails miserably at comprehending to establish a record of complex jobs nobody could vibe their way out of. I.e. become the nuclear bomb of knowledge they cannot afford to risk losing.

I think anyone who’s paid any attention to targeted advertising has know this long before LMMs were a thing. Removing the ‘easy answer’ is just a legal formality at this point and does little to nothing for the privacy it claims to protect. Advertisers like Google like it that way and will fight tooth and nail against any ‘reconsiderations’

Except countries don’t fund the whole game and certainly not without conditions and criteria.

This also ignores indie devs who often only get their start self funding their project via day jobs. We could have so many more new ideas in niche genres if actually gave two shits about supporting new devs and not some AAA mega corp churning out the same uninspired garbage.

From a techical perspective I’m still annoyed that the amorphous blobs were not the agreed default. They are the simplest to store in SVG, have no gradients to render, and being non-human makes them not require skin/gender modifiers. All expression, nothing more.

I have my reolink cameras setup on an internal network without direct internet access, but have a server running Frigate and a VPN that I can remote into from my phone. Gives me full control of where the recordings are backed up and remote access controls. This setup works for their doorbells too which is neat.
