Honest question, where are you that taxes go up if you get married? In most places I know, things get more tax efficient when you’re married. You can typically transfer assets (or debts) between each other without incuring the taxes you would if you weren’t married, and you can make more efficient use of tax free allowances.

May I suggest an enhancement to this? Rather than cents, go to a money changer and get small denomination coins from a country neither of you have ever visited and hide those. The more unusual the country the better, and if you can get them all with the same mint year better still.

As for a suggestion, maybe get a bulk pack if “elf on a shelf” elves, and hide them in rarely checked areas; under the bed, on top of cupboards, right at the back, taped to the bottom of the dining table, under the couch cushions, and the like.
