I was recommended videos of Richard Feynman taking about physics. They turned out to be an AI generated facsimile of his voice reading talks that he actually recorded over some AI generated still images.

Utterly fucking useless. No reason for this to exist. It adds nothing.

I avoid YouTube as much as possible, anyway. Too much crap and gen AI is just dragging it down further.

I heard someone say that they turn off video recommendations on YouTube now with an extension, so as to not waste time and only see their subscriptions. I think it’s time for me to do the same

I have two YouTube accounts and I use recommendations on both. I almost never see garbage on my homepages because I don’t watch garbage and use the two “Don’t Recommend This” buttons when I see something I don’t like.

One is just music (work computer) and every once in awhile it’ll suggest AI or a genre I dislike but I’m talking like twice a month. And I use it every week day

This feature is actually built right into YouTube. I found that if you disable your watch history, it refuses to show you any videos on the home screen. And as an added bonus, it blocks you from the Shorts tab as well!

I’ve been using Newpipe for ages. It doesn’t really show you recommendations, just your subscriptions and on a separate tab a list of generic new popular videos (trending stuff with millions of views). You can absolutely ignore that too. Anyway, I haven’t seen AI unless I specifically search for it, which is nice.

I saw these too which is such a shame, I worry fewer people will take Feynman seriously. He’s such an incredible mind, speaker and teacher, adulterating his message is so unnecessary.
