I can’t stand aviation news reporting…This was 100% human error. Someone moved the gear handle (commanding the retraction of the landing gear), with hydraulics powered, after defeating numerous safeties.
There are many reasons to be messing around with the gear handle on the ground, but there are also MANY procedures (because this is the result every time) to do so safely.
You can see the main landing gear doors open in this picture:

…opening the gear doors is the first step of a commanded gear retraction.
Holy shit.
This thing collapsed at the gate, before passengers were on board.
A collapse on takeoff or landing could have killed everyone on board.
I was never afraid to fly … until the latest generation of Boeing jets. I know that statistically the risk is still very low, but when it turns out I’m going to fly on a Dreamliner, I’m always somewhat stressed.
Well, the 767 Max is fucking scary, everything about that aircraft is a mess. But on a technical level, the 787 "dreamliner’ is a whole different story. There were some real innovations with that aircraft, it’s doing a lot right.
That said, there could certainly be some new issues with it that I’m not aware of. But at least, the last I heard, it was still a really good example of modern aerospace tech.
Have to admit, I agree. I know there is a lot of sensationalism out there, but there are serious reasons to take issue with Boeing’s output, especially newer models.
It’s not like I’m refusing to fly on Boeing and I think that’s generally an overreaction… but there is a slight, very slight relief when I see my flight is scheduled with an Airbus.
Nightmareliner
If it’s Boeing…I’m not going.
Boeing
At this point I wouldn’t even buy a bottle opener from Boeing.
What, you want to open the plane up with a Boeing opener? No need for that, the door plugs pop out on their own. For your convenience.
The front fell off…
Yeah, that’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point!
For Boeing? More typical than one might hope.
whoooosh
Oh, I got the Clark and Dawe reference. But if you think the front falling off isn’t typical for Boeing, you haven’t been paying attention for the last few years.
