IIRC from my junior high days of being on the basketball team, If the ball is in your possession, you need to dribble it while moving. If you ever put BOTH hands on it any time after receiving a pass (catching a pass with both hands is okay), you can no longer take a step (you may pivot but not take a step) even if you dribble it; you have to shoot or pass.

To add to this, I’m pretty sure throwing it at the backboard would count as losing possession, so you could dribble again afterwards.
Yeah, maybe I should reword that. Taking possession with both hands is okay, no matter how you gain possession afaik. Rebounds, steals, etc.
