He was described at the time of his arrest as living in Nome, which – given Alaska’s expansiveness – is about 200 miles (320km) away from Chevak by airplane.

By a staggering coincidence, it is also 200 miles by car, dogsled, mule train, and pogo stick.

“Ulric’s advice to youth is, ‘Just do it,’ to start something without hesitation,” a news release from the AFN at the time said of Ulroan. “His late grandmother’s advice [is] ‘no matter what anyone does to you, leave them alone and do anything back.’”

    Nope. No warning signs there.

Maybe by dogsled or pogo stick, but mules would die of exposure and trying to go by car would require a 4x4 and blazing a new trail through the wilderness.

Distance by road is probably longer than by plane as roads need to follow terrain instead of going straight from point A to point B, hence why the author felt it necessary to specify.

There literally is no road from Chevak to Nome. In fact, there isn’t a road from Chevak to anywhere. The furthest you can get from the center of town by car is… the airport.

Also sometimes called “as the crow flies” vs “as the wolf runs”.
