This bill requires specified online platforms to establish safeguards for minors. The safeguards include (1) limiting access to specified sexual material, (2) providing parental controls on social media and online video game platforms, and (3) requiring artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots to disclose certain information to users who are minors.
First, publicly available online platforms on which more than one-third of the content is considered sexual material harmful to minors under the bill must adopt technology to identify minors and prevent them from accessing such material.
Next, social media platforms must (1) implement default settings for minors that limit compulsive usage features and the ability of other users to communicate with minors, and (2) provide tools for parents to manage the privacy and account settings of a minor. Social media platforms may not allow ephemeral messaging features for minors.
The bill also requires online video game platforms to provide tools that allow parents to (1) limit communication between a minor and other users of the platform, and (2) restrict purchases by a minor on the platform.
Further, providers of AI chatbots must disclose to users who are minors (1) that the chatbot is an AI system and not a human, and (2) suicide and crisis intervention hotline information.
Finally, the bill requires specified studies and reports about the effects of social media platforms on minors and provides for enforcement of the bill’s requirements by the Federal Trade Commission and state attorneys general.
Never about protecting children about fighting privacy and making data collection easier.

I went on Facebook earlier. I saw a post in a ‘Lord of The Rings’ group that shared a meme comparing orcs to immigrants. The whole joke was that the orc said “my son was born in the shire therefore he is a hobbit” because you know. Immigrants and refugees.
And then I saw a Bobs Burger group where the main post was the family holding up an anti Trans flag. This stuff is daily. The comments are much worse.
I see this everyday and I partially blame all of you here. So many of you here were the ‘exodus’ people. Convincing every liberal or leftist user to block and ban and remove ourselves from other areas online. Since then everything has become so much worse and even though responsibility is on the poster, I still hold so many of you responsible for quitting when you’re needed the most.
I come here to lemmy to see if anything crazy good is happening and it isn’t. Like 4chan launched whole ass investigations. A bunch of racist morons performed some of the greatest opsec in internet history. Lemmy is posting about beans and moths and I just don’t know what to do beyond being mad at you all.
And I get it, touch grass. But that doesn’t help when I log off and go out only to find that the hatred and toxicity from these major platforms is infecting the whole yard. There’s no escape. And you people who are suppose to be the resistance can’t be fucking bothered. You’re like lulled into this weird quiet existence only to be rallied under the most useless civic action imaginable every 2 years.
I just don’t know what to do other than be mad and angry.
We should be out there. Identifying these networks and the latest strategies being used to corrupt everything. We should be innovating and building protections with fediverse. Instead we got pro China moderation and censorship and bean memes. I don’t know. It’s just defeating.
We left those platforms because they were corporate owned and did not support us.
Every racist/phobic meme is allowed, we get banned for calling them out. We report them and nothing happens except we get banned for reporting them.
It is not our fault capitalism decided to ban the left and promote hate instead. And 4chans greatest claim to fame for a decade was “shoe on head”.
I’m doing this, daily on reddit. Just copped a temp ban for using arctic-shift to identify and shame agitators. I try and get one to delete their account a day, whilst sharing the tools with others. I’m one person though. (Sorry to reply to you multiple times. You’re the first person to reply to me and I’m still figuring out the layout of Lemmy)
I want you to know I consider myself an old-school leftist. I’m fucking angry. And I have an abundance of free time, so I channel it.
I do think a lot of people are waiting until November to decide their next move though. Will it be obviously rigged, or will it be possible to take him down using non-violent apparatus.
