“I never made much progress on this idea” - It’s looking increasingly likely that the future of console gaming is going to be digital-only, as Sony has just …
If I had to make a platform with physical media, I would distribute games on SD cards.
Games would come on a micro-SD card, coming inside the box inserted inside a full-size SD adapter for compatibility’s sake.
The boxes would probably be around 3DS box sized to enable including a manual, proper box art and a back cover, while being compact.
I know this is controversial but I would make the boxes out of cardboard. Collectors can keep them, and non-collectors can just throw them in the recycling.
SD Cards are a damn lot more expensive than discs though.
And don’t last nearly as long.
The problem with LRG and similar is the limited factor, we don’t need another scalper paradise but more prints and aviability.
Crazy idea: Valve needs to start designing a version of the Steam Machine with a disc drive
I can see third party companies for this since Valve is probably the last one who wants you to not buy digital.
Plus you’d need Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher to get games running.
But if it was a BluRay drive, you should still be able to watch movies without issue
I’d love to see something like the SuperDock come out for the Steam Machine, except like - actually functioning would be a bonus!
