I tend to agree that company backed projects go to shit after the shareholders get involved, but while there is nothing stopping Valve from doing an IPO in the future, they are currently a privately held company. This means they have no irrational share holders to appease. My desktop which is running a i7-6700k from 2015 out performs all of the <$400 laptops that I could find on every metric and had higher multi core but lower single core for the $400-$600 range. I was unable to find a desktop that was <$800 that was better, so I would surmize that the desktop market won’t have a meaningful price/performance % in comparison to the laptops. At the very least with the insanity of graphics & memory prices at the moment, the budget systems are getting smoked by a desktop from 2015, even while purposefully omitting the 2070 I have because that was a newer addition and pretty much all of the systems are running poor quality integrated graphics anyway.
