  • A door-to-door salesman knocks on the door of a farm and a small boy opens the door.

“Hi kid, is your father at home?”

    “No, he’s in the hospital”

    “I’m so sorry, what happened?”

“He got run over by a tractor”

“That’s terrible! Is your mom at home then?”

“No, she’s also in the hospital.”

    “What happened to her?”

“Got run over by a tractor as well”

    “Then who’s looking after you?”

“Well, my aunt and uncle did until they got run over by a tractor”

“How horrible, so you are here all alone?”

“Yes. Everyone’s been run over by a tractor”

“So what do you do here all day all by yourself?”

“Not much, just riding around on a tractor”

  • I was raised catholic and went to a catholic primary school. We went to visit the local church with our school class in preparation for confirmation, I was maybe 7 or 8, dunno, it’s a long time ago. During these visits the priest would explain things about he church, communion, etc.

On one such occasion he showed the altar lamp and explained that the light represented the real presence of christ in the church. If you don’t know what this is, it’s basically an elaborate lamp with a red light inside it.

My nerdy little brain spent the next week trying to figure out how this “christ detector” light worked (mind you, this was way before the internet so I couldn’t exactly google it). I had all kinds of designs worked out, like there being a hidden button and the priest asking christ in prayer to please keep the button pressed, things like that.

The next week’s visit we were a little early and I caught the bastard putting in a candle and lighting it himself. I would have accepted him putting in a candle and it lighting on its own (although that would only prove the presence at the moment of lighting the candle) but no, it was just the priest lighting the candle. This whole christ detector lamp was a huge scam. That got me thinking as to what else they were lying about…

Nothing really happened, I basically stopped going. My parents made me go at christmas a few times but that was basically it. Religion is not really a big deal in my country.

  • You used to be able to look at a computer and see exactly what kind of connections it supported. Now there even are computers where the supported features are different between ports that look exactly the same. It’s not just “does this laptop have DisplayPort out”, but you have to figure out which port supports what. It’s SCART all over again.

You used to be able to tell your mom to just put the cable into the hole with the same shape, often they were even color-coded. Now try to explain over the phone which of the 5 identical-looking cables she should use and in which of the 4 identical-looking port it should be plugged.

    That is objectively worse.

  • I’ve had both a Logicrap keyboard case and the Apple one. They’re not even close.

The Logicrap one worked, sure, at least for a while; but the tactile feel of the keys on the Apple case is much nicer. The trackpads are incomparable. But the worst part is the build quality.

The Logicrap one came with a rubberized case for the iPad with a magnetically attached keyboard/trackpad. It both made the iPad feel heavy and bulky, and the rubber part around the ports/speakers started deforming almost immediately (and after a year or so it started tearing). Some key stopped responding after a year or two.

You get what you pay for.
