Yeah, I see this and wish they’d put one in front of my kids’ school. Every road in my town is 25mph, every single one. We have those digital signs in a couple places in town that read exactly that. People still do 40 in front of the school, where kids walk. We are a town where a good chunk of people walk to school, I walk my kids, and people still fly around. Leaving earlier is never an option, need to speed everywhere to make up 30 seconds.

They have one of those signs that tells you how fast you’re going, though. So effective.

I’m assuming his rationale related to failure to maintain physical and grooming standards. I know he wanted everyone doing the same PT tests, and at the end of the day women have always had more relaxed standards for PT, and then black servicemembers got no shave chits more than other races. It’s so fucking dumb, but this was his setup, and now he’s moving forward with it. Because some black dude gets ridiculous bumps when he shaves, he’s now passed over for promotion. Crazy.

I believe PT standards should be the same for men and women, but I also believe they should reflect your job. If you work admin, or chow hall, you don’t need to be at the same fitness level as someone in the infantry, that’s just silly. And I came from Marine land, where every marine is a rifleman, if so they say, but it’s just not true. Logistics are a huge part of any war effort, we need people in those jobs, and they absolutely do not need to be at the same level of fitness as front lines. Not saying they don’t need fitness, but a different standard is appropriate.

We keep our doors open because we have young kids. My cat knows this and abuses it. And by the time my kids are old enough to start shutting their doors, Bruce Willis probably will be at the end of his rope, and I’ll wish he was still around to abuse it.

Yeah, I recently got Strava, but I’m about at the point of ditching it. I run alone. Garmin keeps any stats just fine, and doesn’t inject any social media into it. I have a couple friends on Garmin, but I have to actively look for their stuff, and they for mine, which is exactly how I like it. Otherwise, I run, and then I can go see how things look, and it gets added to the archive.

And I’ll even say, I don’t want to flip burgers. The thing I want to do most is my job, and other people can do other jobs. I feel like there’s always this fear, oh, who will do the skilled/educated jobs! Like, smart folks will not suddenly be like “Eh, I don’t want to be a doctor anymore because people can survive on flipping burgers.”

Social media, IMO, is Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Lemmy, Reddit, and the like, are more akin to message boards, which I think of as being distinct. Reddit seems to be trying to transform itself, but I still use old.reddit, and once they get rid of that they get rid of me with t.

Yeah, for me it was all AIM chats, though I had a couple friends who used IRC. But if you wanted to be part of the conversation, you better know how to type. You wanna make a quip? Better be quick, because so does everyone else.

Yeah, I switched my launcher to Lawnchair because they put the AI button right where my right thumb would touch the search bar. It seemed like it was also by design. My launcher now looks identical to the stock launcher on the Pixel, except without an AI button.

I’m on the home screen for one second. The remote, in fact, has buttons on it, I don’t even need to look at the home screen.

You can add or remove tiles as you see fit (although they definitely like to add some for you from time to time), but like I said, I barely use the tiles.

I appreciate what you’re saying, but I don’t understand how it’s feasible. You have people with second homes in beach communities, and so they shouldn’t have those, those second homes should be primary residences. But those communities, now, are not situated to support people in those as primary residence, not at 100%. I’m talking schools, police, fire, utilities, the whole nine. All of those things take into account basically nonuse during a certain time. And that’s excluding the fact that if these were occupied full time, people wouldn’t be able to get to work every day, it would be chaos. And yes, there are solutions, but feasibility is key, and I just don’t see it being feasible.

I like what Mamdani is doing. If you’re essentially wasting space, having essentially uninhabited apartments in a city that needs affordable places to live, he’s taxing the shit out of them (I’m simplifying). And so ideally this creates some pool of funds to be used toward affordable housing, but at the end of the day I still think the best thing to do is mandate set-asides for affordable, 20% of the units on any project. An alternative is obviously that the government builds housing, but the benefit of private development is that now those affordable units are also tied to market rate units, and so the developer has an interest in maintaining all the units. With a 100% government funded affordable housing project, it just leaves the door open for cuts that turns it from an opportunity into a slum.

I don’t disagree with you, I just don’t know that it’s realistic. But I do think its philosophically where the discussion needs to begin, and then we need to account for pesky reality.

Nobody would build anything if the first X number of units had to be affordable, unless I’m misunderstanding you. The city needs 200k units of affordable, and so until that need is met, any new unit is affordable? Development would be stifled entirely. And I hate it, as someone who likes affordable housing, but it’s a give and take, and nobody is going to spend money on a project that they can’t make money. Mandatory set-asides on projects over X number of units is the only feasible compromise.

The US’s best export, so to speak, is it’s money. People in the US buy more than anywhere. It has a larger consumer market than EU, China, and India combined. That’s ridiculous to think about, a country of 350m outspending 3.5b. As much as I can’t stand trump and think everything is wrong, leveraging the US and it’s buying power is a tactic that makes sense. I wouldn’t even be mad if it was just part of some negotiation, but it coupled with obviously all the rest of the shit kinda changes the light that it’s shown in.

Beyond your own personal support, depending on where you live there are a lot of resources available from your government, either local, county, state, or wherever. There are also private organizations that help out.

Unfortunately, this is my wife’s job, and I say unfortunately because I don’t have specifics, I only know of their existence. But resources for shelter, food, even money, they are out there, and you just need to know where to look.

Yeah, I had my first before COVID, and then COVID happened, and I’ve turned away a lot simply because it cuts into time with my kids. I walk them to school every day, so I can’t leave my house til 845-9am earliest, but that doesn’t stop me from covering remote work that starts normally at 10. And I stop by 330 or so every day and go get my kids. If I was somewhere else, I’d be stopping at 230, and I do so with absolutely zero remorse, don’t care if we’re done or not. Kids are my number one priority, they won’t be this age forever, and I intend to maximize my time with them.

Yeah, I don’t even know what you’re talking about, and that makes me extra certain that politicians definitely don’t know what you’re talking about. It is nice to see them perhaps taking into account expert opinions on this subject, but 1 for 100 doesn’t make for a good average.

Yeah, I just tell my kids that we aren’t getting them Roblox. The only concession I made was letting my daughter get some for dress to impress vip, and for the couple bucks she spent there, she’s logged enough hours to make it feel like it wasn’t a waste. I tell them absolutely not to spending money on anything that’s not persistent, or to anything that’s “cheating,” because what’s the point.

Generally agree with everything you said, a lot of rehashing, although they’ve sucked me into the “obby” games, as I grew up on platformers and still enjoy them, and so I’ll give their silly platformer a try here and there. It sucks when they’re just reskinned. My son also likes to play the horror games with me, and it’s incredible how many different version of roadside stand with anomalies there is.
