I used to be able to browse the web happily with JS disabled. It started to get worse about 10 years ago and really bad about 6 years ago and EXTREMELY bad over the past year or two.

And I get it, it’s because of all the scrapers constantly fucking everything up and needing to be blocked. But still. The internet is unusable. All so the likes of Gemini or Claude or Deepseek can generate unlimited amounts of spam and slop.

Depends on the game. A title like dota will have a lot of savings (tens of gigabytes last I checked it). Most other games it seems don’t have obviously and easily compressible assets from a generic compression algorithm, and therefore will yield extremely minor savings.

Checked some installed games. DotA is down to 36 gb from 67. Almost 54% the original size.

RoboCop rogue city is 37->37gb. Negligible savings.

I walked into a Best Buy last fall just to kind of browse the computers on offer. The sales rep recommended a laptop (Asus, I think) with 16gb of RAM, saying he actually even got his aunt one of the same model he was recommending to me.

I do what you are asking about literally with a 2014 Thinkpad. The only thing is I don’t use any “fancy” features. For instance, with Jellyfin I ensure that the data is in a commonly supported format to ensure there is no transcoding or remuxing performed by the server itself.

So, just find any computer made in the last 7 years, slap Linux on it, and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I think you just need well-placed parks in the urban areas. I think it’s worth asking ourselves why we don’t really hear people bemoan the upbringing and experiences of kids from really urban cities like NYC or Tokyo. And at least in the USA you will go into a lot of debt if you don’t come from wealth just to get through it. And there are no promises of stable income and employment when you do get through it.

For my own part, I busted my ass through university and now I’m seeing all my efforts get gobbled up into AI, cheapening everything I’ve ever done and worked for, and possibly evicting me from my career sometime in the coming few years. That wasn’t a concern when I graduated, LLMs didn’t exist yet. But they do now for current and future students.
