I’d venture to say there is one data type, a record. At its more basic level every filesystem is a database, every file stored on the drive is a record in the database.
I’m with you though, docx is not a text file… Much more like an xml file.

Have you ever bought a game via a Steam key? Those use Steam’s infrastructure for distribution while not providing them (Steam) any income.
As someone that has entered so many Steam keys over the years (over 1,000) yet only bought maybe 20 games from Steam I almost feel bad, but the dev was following the rules and Steam is okay with it (as long as they aren’t selling those keys for less than they can be purchased on Steam for).

Yep. Sell your game for whatever you want wherever you want. If you want to distribute your game via Steam (Steam keys), you can’t sell them cheaper than they are sold on Steam because you aren’t handling the distribution (which costs money).
Otherwise a competing company (like Ubisoft) could just make a 20TB game, list it on steam for a crazy price, then sell Steam keys for it on another storefront cheap; Steam will have to cover the distribution costs without making anything in return.

Amazing job and beautifully written! Now I kind of want one of these speakers lol.

I remember reading about a kid making one of these over a decade ago, I’m not sure what this one is using but I think the other person used microphones to track the wingflaps and burn them. I always wondered what would happen to the project…
Or the guy that suicided himself in his apartment in London, thankfully he was considerate enough to wipe his phone and lock himself in a suitcase in the bathtub after though.

That sounds so much better than spending hours in calls with Microsoft engineers that don’t ever seem to make the progress we set out to do.

If the players aren’t being paid to play, I don’t think we can really be upset at them throwing a game every now and then. The people that can get mad are the ones profiting, but the players aren’t employees, they are more like vetted volunteers, so either profit share with them, or remember they are playing a game, not going to work.

This is the best option when dealing with companies like MS. Some companies actually use reports, issue CVEs, acknowledge shit… MS does not, fuck them. Sell the 0day to a company that will go on to sell it to a state actor, MS will patch it eventually but you won’t be treated like shit to keep it under the rug.

I know they have gotten brighter over the years but that’s not what’s been the biggest issue for me. To me it’s the fact these trucks keep getting taller, 3 feet ago it wasn’t as bad because the lights were closer to the road, now the headlights on these trucks are damn near eye-level.

Symbolic links for the win!

Unlimited Usenet plans are pretty cheap to depending on sales.
Edit to add: I’m not a quality snob, but I’d probably blow through 500GB way too quickly.

Exactly why I’d like to shift my life. I’m not looking for profits, just time away from my desk lol.

I love mint, but much prefer LMDE over the Ubuntu based one.

Wanna be a goat farmer with me (https://www.goatops.com/) ? I’ve been in IT for 20 years or so and when I first saw that goat list maybe 10-15 years ago it gave me a chuckle, then over the years it made more sense and became a goal. Not necessarily goats, but something entirely separate from IT; for now I’m stuck trying to earn a bit of a retirement, but my eye is on the door.
There is still some good IT stuff to be done though. I have a homelab that I use to avoid Google where I can (degoog/nextcloud/immich/etc), and keep my data indoors as much as possible…
When the doctor is late I tell them they missed their appointment time and will need to reschedule, then I enjoy the time I took off work for an appointment. It doesn’t happen often, but if it hits 10 minutes past when they should be seeing me, I assume they overbooked themselves and won’t be giving me the attention I’m paying them for; we can reschedule.

Authentik is your friend fam. Might take a minute or two to get it spun up the way you want, but then you can support using a single IdP (that you control) for all your hosted stuff (except Plex). If you want MFA you’ll have to set it up differently than I, I just use an LDAP lookup but it works great.

Plexamp is all that’s keeping it installed in my homelab.

I’ve still got my Plex up, I only use it for Plexamp though, and my brother watches stuff on it (lifetime pass since forever). I quit watching stuff on it because in order to log in you have to hit Plex’s servers (even when logging in directly to the self hosted server); that doesn’t work for me because we block them at work. If they would let me use my own IdP, I’d probably stay. At least with Jellyfin I can authenticate how I want.
Paying them off before interest hits is paramount.
