There’s a variety of reasons, but the biggest is that Lemmy as a whole is FAR more class-conscious than the average populace, or even that average internet user, and generative AI has been developed by the wealthy and powerful, as a tool to oppress everyone else.

Machine learning in medicine and healthcare has been around for decades, and has basically nothing to do with the LLM and image generation garbage that has now colloquially become known as “AI”.

Half the problem with “AI hate” is how goddamned nebulous of a term it’s become. When people say they hate AI, they’re almost certainly talking about specifically all the new generative commercialized stuff from just the past few years, but so many people hear that and assume something a LOT broader.

Yup. I had this exact thought YESTERDAY, when I did a search for the name of a GitHub project I needed to read up on (I forget which project), with a couple keywords, and the GitHub page wasn’t even IN the top results. Later, I was doing a search for a quoted phrase, which of course is supposed to guarantee that the phrase appears, verbatim, in the results, and found that NONE of the results contained that phrase.

And no, I wasn’t looking at the AI results, I’ve got those removed with a plugin.

Not really, no. There’s a LOT of gripes with what we colloquially call “Generative AI”, and almost none of them are applicable to CGI. To name some of the most significant ones…

• They exist because they were trained on MASSIVE amounts of real human works, virtually none of which was given with the creator’s consent.
• They aren’t being built for the benefit of humanity, they’re being monopolized by a very small set of powerful scumbags, looking toake a peofit and further cement their power in the world.
• They are exerting a VERY real and significant strain upon our collective resources, both economic and physically-necessary, to the point that they are causing suffering in the world, that will only get worse.

Sure. The myth is that you can the “awesome at everything” and “do it all super quickly” bits together at the same time.

You’re not alone. This is actually my recommendation to anyone who hasn’t played it, when the topic of Tunic comes up: Just turn on No-Fail mode for the bosses. They’re all horribly unbalanced, and not worth your effort. And they’re absolutely NOT what makes the game great.

The author may be, in theory, right, but it counts for nothing if the people in charge don’t recognize where that actual value is. Which MANY of them do not.

The article itself gives a prtty good description. It’s a fairly common term, popularized over a decade ago, during the big tech startup boom, for a super-high-productivity developer. Someone who is just awesome at everything they do and can do everything, and do it all super quickly. I.E. a myth.

I dunno if I’d call it Linux friendly. It runs under Proton moderately well, but it feels like it’s still not quite as good as it was on Windows. And there’s no official support.
