My biggest pain points with Linux have mostly been audio related. Audio is serviceable for general users but whenever it comes to either professional audio work or high end consumer audiophile stuff, Mac and Windows unfortunately blow Linux out of the fucking water at this point in time.

  • I think you’re mixing up Waterfox with Librewolf. Librewolf by default deletes all your data after closing it, Waterfox doesn’t.

It’s actually for this reason that I use both for different purposes. I sign into accounts with Waterfox (using account containers and browser profiles so each account’s data is self-contained and not shared between each other) and use a sandboxed installation of Librewolf with a few extensions like NoScript installed and letterboxing enabled for anything I don’t sign into (i.e. news articles, web searches, etc.) so that the 50-odd domains running scripts on my local news station’s website get way less of a fingerprint off me to use to target ads at me or sell my data to data brokers or the gestapo.

  • My PC is only like, 5 years old and Windows 11 doesn’t support it. Windows 10 ran smoothly, it does RTX, modern games run fine on it, the most graphically intensive AAA games run a little poorly but still run nonetheless, and I can always lower the graphics settings to get better performance. It’s certainly more powerful and higher spec than a lot of the office PCs that do run Windows 11. Buuuut the motherboard doesn’t have a TPM 2.0 chip so it’s archaic e-waste as far as Microsoft is concerned. It’s been running Linux just fine for the last year and a half or so, and not once have I ever felt that my PC is too old and needs to be upgraded or replaced.

  • Adding a birthday field is not privacy invading in itself the same way brandishing a knife is not assault in itself.

Context matters. I’ve held knives before and it was completely inocuous. I’ve used knives to chop vegetables, to spread butter, to carve something out of wood, etc. If I pulled out a knife while in a heated argument with someone that’d be a whole other story, and I don’t think “I was just holding the knife, is it illegal to hold knives now?” would exonerate me from accusations of intent or threat to assault someone.

In any other context adding a date of birth field would be inocuous. You’re not required to use it after all. But in this context as I understand it, it is explicitly infrastructure for age verification, even if it is not age verification in itself.

  • Take this with a grain of salt cause this is just what I’ve heard from a friend who knows a lot more about server hosting than I do, but from what I’ve heard hosting a Matrix homeserver is a potential legal liability unless you’re really selective about who you let on your server cause it stores the entire state of every room a user uses, so all it takes is one friend of a friend to visit a sketchy room where people have shared csam and you could be in trouble.

Assuming this is accurate and not just my friend misunderstanding something or being overly paranoid I could imagine people being very hesitant about hosting their own server rather than just using the default matrix.org server.
