Depends on the car. I think Tesla’s are always connected, but other brands you have to put a SIM card in so you have a choice.
I get the concern, I wouldn’t want to be monitored constantly by a 3rd party, but in this case I think it’s just for safety (monitoring driver fatigue) and convenience.
You don’t login, the car recognises you and adjusts settings such as the seat position to the way you like to have it without you having to do it manually, it’s a convenience thing.

Life was simpler, 1 TV in the house, 1 corded phone. So technology didn’t dominate our lives like it does now. As kids we were more active than kids today are.
While some would say life was better then, that is not necessarily the case. People still struggled to pay their bills, they were scared of the Cold War, AIDS and the hole in the ozone layer. They were more likely to die of cancer, heart attacks and other illnesses that modern medicine is better at dealing with.
If life seems worse now, in many respects it’s because of the media, in all its forms, which mainly focuses on the negative, and it’s much harder to avoid than it was in the 1900’s

Focus on the positive and don’t dwell on the negative. Play games, tinker with hardware and open-source software. Get off platforms like Reddit/Lemmy where negativity is much more pervasive.
Of course, if you find yourself “recoiling from all online spaces” then consider alternative hobbies that give you the same level of satisfaction.

If the manufacturer is required by law to have a camera to monitor driver fatigue then they’ll make use it for other things like this.
