I think what’s missing is the request to be more special than others.

There are aquarium groups, but I’ve never seen them comment that you should shut up if you don’t own an aquarium. There is a “dull men” group, and I never saw them trying to forbid someone to speak in their room if they are too interesting or too female.

If you don’t want out-group people to participate, your solution is not a platform that allows everybody to participate, and then scold people if they do. It just makes it seem like it’s a deliberate setup to be able to tell people “You made a mistake. You have the wrong gender” - and if not that, they at least demand special treatment among the equals on Lemmy, also not a character trait that people appreciate.

  • Aside from purely theoretical, philosophical interest (suuuure), it doesn’t really matter, does it?

“Ah yes, now that you showed us the opinion of these online strangers on your phone, we will be ok angering your father - the man who famously hires ex-legionnaires for protection of his family - for a little hanky panky.”

  • But that’s really sad, if you think about it.

“Generally in the USA, it’s considered suspicious.”

That means generally, Americans are unaware of these father-child activities.

That means generally, Americans didn’t have a good father.

Now, a lot of people would intuitively jump to “Nah my dad was ok” - but if this isn’t normal behaviour for you, then you’re just unaware of how bad your whole frame of reference is. That is a tough pill to swallow, though.

  • I think that’s a slight pun.

The “-archy” part comes from the greek for “to rule/command”. Monarchy = rule by a king, oligarchy = rule by few, etc.

And the “an-” part means “not” or “without”. So anarchy technically means “not ruled” or “without rule” - but if things are still being ruled, it would still be an “archy”, not a “not archy”.

  • Yeah recently had this happen in the. Net world for some projects: They went from free to commercial or some other reason, and then people quickly forked the last version before that. All with that idea that they’re the defenders of what was good about it.

But let’s face it, if you had anywhere near the interest and commitment to that subject matter, you’d already be maintaining a competing project, or be helping at the original one.

I think people are enticed by the glory of having a repo with many stars, but have no realistic idea how much of their time this would eat up if they were serious about it.
