  • I teach industrial electronics at a community college. We get a wide spectrum of students, many are average students, some upper 10% absorb information like a sponge and i barely have to teach them anything, then there’s the lower 10% who are so clueless and confused that you don’t understand how they arrived to class on their own (assuming they didn’t literally have help from somebody). They can barely count, they don’t know what fractions are, they can’t keep papers and handouts organized, they have horrible spatial reasoning, etc. The sad part is they know how bad they are… even if you’re a dummy, you’re but clueless about it, especially when you see the other 15 people in a class who ate learning and progressing to the next thing yet you cannot grasp the items being presented. These people are still on problem number 2 after 15 minutes when others are already done with the whole first page. Anyway what always happens is I’ll drag them through the classwork but they do horrible on quizzes and exams, muddle through with a C average (which really means you don’t understand the content), then they usually wash out during the 3rd or 4th semester. It’s very predictable during their very first classes but hey it’s not my job to profile people even if it’s a guarantee 🤷‍♂️

  • I drove past the construction site every day. They call it “The Barn” after hiring a marketing firm to come in and try to make it more appealing. It’s massive and just gets bigger and bigger. iirc they got permission to begin construction before it was approved, then the zoning drama began. There’s now a razor wire fence around the perimeter and the area is patrolled by state cops during the day. Clearly they know the situation.

The worst thing is I constantly get targeted ads about the construction. The ads say “we’ll pay for the giant increase in energy consumption” and “it’ll help reduce costs for everyone!” which is obvious horseshit. What costs are gonna go down, how will they be reduced? Energy costs? Fuel costs? Taxes? The marketing firm knows people are stupid enough to believe anything, even sentences that don’t make any fucking sense.

  • My grandpa was in North Africa before getting moved around to England for D-day. Allies wanted to swoop up through the Mediterranean but were halted. I tenderness hearing about gramps catching malaria down there but recovered. He later went to the China Burma India theater (CBI) training the local groups to fight Japan. I have a couple handkerchiefs that they carried around with a series of translations they could show to people on the street. Definitely a lot of other things happening outside of Europe!

  • Not mine but I was in the same room (took place at college). Two brothers were taking similar classes and somehow began arguing about the physics of how a vampire would be invisible in a mirror. To the point where they were yelling at the other brother about his lack of understanding of refractive physics and geology of the minerals that were smelled to make the mirror glass. The debate was whether a vampire would be visible when viewed through soda glass versus lime glass. Eventually I had to break their debate since they were being so loud and aggressive that people thought they were gonna come to bless over it.
