So in the context of 4KBluray disks…
More or less there is a type of DRM on the disks that can only be played if a key of some type passes a check. This seems to just be something with 4k disks in my experience.
To successfully rip these disks, people have modified their blu-ray drives firmware to just…not check the key, and proceed as normal (lol).
Not all blu-ray drives are able to have their firmware modified, some firmware is encrypted or downgrading firmware to a lower modified version is not possible.
Drives that have been modified with the firmware can be considered Libre Drives as the firmware enables Libre Drive support in the makemkv software.
Searching up LibreDrive would point you into the right direction and forum where you can acquire the tools or info to make your own drive.
They likely mean blu-ray drives running custom firmware. It’s how 4kBD movies are ripped
