I’m frustrated with the fact that AI is replacing a lot of junior positions, and with people that use it to fully automate tasks. It does not bode well for the future of the industry.
I’m not a junior dev though, and I use AI as a tool, which is what it is, to plan changes, search for potential issues while I check something else, then review their output and so on. The premise is that I do understand our code very well, and that I know exactly what must be done when proposing changes. It helps me autocomplete while I write, check hard to find docs or write/format doc pages. I always search for actual real sources before committing anything.
It’s a tool, it would be crazy to keep using a hatchet because chainsaws sometimes injure people. With proper training and knowledge a chainsaw helps you work faster.
Now, there was no LLM when I was a junior Dev so I acknowledge that my position is a bit of “f u I got mine”, but we can’t deny that it’s a very useful tool that helps in coding
Still completely against and very frustrated with the full automation and erasure of junior positions though. It won’t affect me that much personally, but the industry will hurt, individuals will suffer and that’s horrible.
About 1, I was commenting on the serverless world, a big part of today’s cloud infrastructure, and AWS is one of the major cloud providers. I feel like, to show the relevance of a language compared to another, it kinda does matter that you can’t code directly and let the provider compile your small-ish program.
About 2, it works with the generic runtime for sure, but almost everything does, technically C++ does too lol, meaning that you need to upload the binary that you compile locally or via some sort of pipeline. Which is worse than say, using typescript and letting them transpiled it into is so Node can run it. It’s not supported in that way.
In any case, you wouldn’t really use a compiled language like Go to have small-ish serverless functions. Go does have a use case ofc, I’m just making a case of how not obsolete python is.

Also, comparing it with a compiled language, good one. Guess what is and what isn’t used in serverless functions, Lambda doesn’t even support Go ffs. It’s java, ruby, node and python. And from those most use node or python.

They take money for papers to be published, they force researchers to freely peer review, and then they paywall the fuck out of that paper. It’s one of the biggest scams I’ve ever read about, 10 years ago… Thank god computer science, math and physics (basically most STEM) have arXiv…

No way the definition of normal I gave is the common one. At some point it doesn’t really matter what the dictionary says, if enough people change the meaning of a word they use, it changes meaning.
Still interesting to look at the roots of a word to see original meanings and so on though.
That’s why I specified that the things I like doing, that feel natural to me, aren’t thing i think are very normal, but “natural”. Even though I know that they are not normal, they are in my nature, for whatever reason.
The moment you are told that something is abnormal, you can’t think of it as very normal, by definition, no? 😅 You might still think that you prefer it, that it feels natural to you (it’s in your nature, personal preference), but not normal.
I’m surprised that anyone is answering anything. If something would seem very normal to me, as in, I think this is something everyone does, I wouldn’t know of it would seem odd to anyone else. By virtue of it seeming very normal to me.
Something being normal is rooted on it being the norm, as in, something typical. If you think something is odd, you can’t feel like it’s normal just for you, that’s not what the norm means. Maybe it seems natural to you? Sure, but not normal.
Sorry for my reading my pedantic rant. In my case, these kind of rationalizations of the language using its roots seem pretty natural and fun but I know most people look at me weird for over analysing stuff.

I’m not taking that position, I’m taking the position of acknowledging how badly it is being used while also taking point on how useful for Devs it is. I was acknowledging the position I am in due to my life in coding work, to give proper context.
You are in an Australian server, I didn’t know that the American AI Dev erasure craze had expanded there, it definitely is affective the Spanish junior positions, but in my data engineering sector, senior positions are permanently lacking.
In any case, I’m sorry for your friends, but I’d be surprised if they don’t find another job fast. Job offers in my country for senior positions have not been reduced, and given that junior positions are being reduced and seniors eventually retire, I don’t see enough reduction to fill the vacuum that the lack of junior is going to create in senior fields.
Mind you, I’m not saying this to say I don’t care, it’s actually the opposite. I’m saying this to say that I care even though I don’t think it will affect me personally in a risk my paycheck kinda way.
