  • Why does OP have a stick with encrypted data if they do not care about its security?

Yes, maybe its just the porn collection that they don’t want others to see, but maybe its actually important stuff.

I think it is important to inform people about the ways their security can be circumvented and if somebody gives security advice its important to inform people if that advice contains flaws.

OP should know about the potential risks and then decide themselves if that is acceptable to them.

And when talking about encryption, people often forget, that the best way to break it is to never attack the encryption, but attack the way people interact with the unencrypted data.

OP should know about the dangers of decrypting their USB with software that could be manipulated.

Is all that overkill in 95% of cases? Probably? Do we know OP isn’t in the 5% where it matters? No.

Maybe they want to hide something from someone in their household who has frequent access to the USB stick. Maybe they are a journalist that might get searched by police/airport security … we do not know and we shouldn’t make assumptions about their threat model.

That’s why I started the comment with “reasonable approach”

  • This is a reasonable way to do it HOWEVER this only protects you against data loss in case of a lost USB stick. If attackers get access to the stick and place it back into your possession afterwards, they can manipulate the portable veracryp so you will run their malware to decrypt the data. The malicious veracryp could then either save the password you entered (hidden somewhere on the USB for the attacker after they steal the stick again) or just upload the whole decrypted data to an attacker server.

If you use the portable veracryp you need to make sure it has not been tampered with.

Well actually decrypting the data on any device you do not trust is risky for the same reason. If veracryp is installed on a machine you still have to trust the person that owns that machine to not have manipulated it or to not have been a victim of malware themselves.

TL:DR decrypting the data on any device you don’t control yourself is risky and optimally you could install veracrypt on any device you control.

  • The problem is that the standard is fucking huge and maybe your browser supports every feature of version 5xx but is missing a feature related to authentication using guinea pigs introduced in v369. So it would only be allowed to advertise compatibility with v368 even though it can do everything except Guinea pigs.

Realistically you would trim the standard to a core set and advertise compatibility with a version of that and then advertise optional extensions. And that’s optional bits if you ask me.

  • Maybe 21 <=> 100 is just the easiest cross over point between the two age scales. Its easier to remember than 18 <=> 85.5 or 16 <=> 76.2 so that’s where they start. They arrive at an equivalent age of 15 and deem that to young. No information was ever given about what the age of legal drinking is. Just that it is older than 15.

Also dwarven ale might be straight schnaps with 80% alcohol for all we know. Don’t want 16 year olds drinking that even if you think beer is fine.

If it is even possible for it to hallucinate a session, it is implemented wrong. It should start transcribing once the session starts and everything it transcribed is saved as that session. Once the session stops the AI is turned of. It never has a chance to hallucinate a season because the AI never decides what a session is.

But we all know the AI will run permanently with full access to read, edit and delete everything…

I heard the wisdom once that you should self host everything except for email. I’m sure there are great tools to make it manageable but the effort/gain is just very high.

Just find a email provider that let’s you connect your own domain, use wildcards, etc.

Of course email is pretty central to most digital identities, as most accounts can be reset through email. So if you absolutely want to be sure you control your identity you must self host email (but you also must own the authoritative DNS for that domain so you must register directly with the TLD and not through a registrar …)

  • The furthest time can be is ±12h from your local time (because of politics, weird timezones and summer/winter time I am sure it could maybe be up to ±14, but if all time was sensible it would be 12).

So if it is 8:00 at your place, one side of the international dateline will have 20:00 yesterday and the other side is 20:00 today.

If your current time is more than 12h away from Friday, then I am sorry to say it is not Friday anywhere on earth.

Edit: I wrote this and went to sleep. Woke up thinking, wait this not right!

Its ±12 for me because I live close to GMT+0. For people at the date line it would either be -0/+24 or -24/+0. So its actually -12-(your time zone)/+12-(your time zone).

But regardless of where you live and what time it is, no place on earth can ever be ±24h from your local time, so when this post was new, it was still impossible.

They are safe raw. Maultaschen are filled with “Brät” which is coocked or fried (gebraten). At least the traditional ones. And the normal Bürger Maultaschen do as well. You might find some variety thats raw but i doubt it for any you find in the store.
