I’ve worked directly with some startup founders and they tend to not understand selection bias very thoroughly. Rather, they see themselves as inherently smarter than other people and eventually they determine that all the decisions they make must be the right ones. Even when their success is very obviously luck they eventually start to think as of they have an infallibility field around them which drives some extremely odd behaviors.

Yeah, for people who aren’t in the gun hobby space, Bloomberg in particular is really weird about guns. I’m not talking like effective ways of reducing violence, he’s constantly throwing money at pushing Kafkaesque regulations like this. His general strategy seems to be trying to reduce violent crime by making as much random unrelated stuff an arrestable offense as possible to the point where it (surprise) just makes it easier for cops to continue the cycle in low income communities.

This always confuses me because if you’re being arrested and you so much as sneeze on the officer you’re gonna get charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.

This is old, the lexipol docs are out there, you can find them pretty easily. They’re not a terribly interesting read, the training manuals are obviously the kinda thing you could enter into a court case so they’re very sterile. There are some interesting bits though, namely some departments have the forms to get subscriber info from the major cellular carriers appended to the back which suggests they like to send those off a lot. Long story short though, to have to be ready to read between the lines a lot.

It’s so interesting seeing the whole list. Most of these guys are around the same age and were the survivors of the dot com bubble. It really speaks to how economically inefficient things have become when one relatively isolated event in a particular (and at the time narrow) industry created a distinct economic class that now just arbitrarily runs the country despite being extremely detached from it.

It feels a bit like the “paperclipping” AI doomsday scenario but instead of paperclips the tech oligarchs only understand tech and are just mindlessly trying to use all of the nations resources to make more tech companies.
