If I send an email to a gmail account my information is still sitting on a Google server. So is Proton worth it?
Due to the nature of email, assume privacy is impossible and just use whatever is easiest (yea, Gmail). Like you mentioned, the message will be in their servers anyways. That is, unless you explicitly only email other Proton users.

If by “open registration” you mean that anybody with your domain name can just go and create an account with no extra verification, then that’s interesting. Good to know.


Element X requires MAS for registration by design, but login is whatever for now. They’re very adamant about making the app MAS-centric.
Also, open registration will get your instance banned from matrix.org homeserver afaik. Probably not an issue if you don’t plan to federate with them, but worth noting.

Also audio and video compression doesn’t aim for original quality, it aims for lower quality that is visually or acoustically“the same” from the human perspective, not the computer. Just because it’s AI doesn’t mean it’s garbage.
