This is true in a lot of spaces that have a specialized skill set. Lots of people doing things by rote without actually understanding the underlying fundamentals of what they’re doing, or just cargo culting nonsense that happens to kind of work but with a lot of wasted effort or a poor quality result.

Several years ago I was looking to set up a media server and initially grabbed Plex because I’d heard so much good about it at the time. The moment it asked me to create an account with Plex during setup and I discovered this wasn’t optional I immediately uninstalled it.

This happened to me on a nextra docs sure I use for one of my projects. Copilot added its attribution to a two line commit that added two items to a page’s _meta.json file. I was baffled as to what copilot could even had potentially have done to help.

Had a conversation with someone recently about exactly this. Usage of AI generated assets gives me exactly the same feelings as a local business using a gmail or personal ISP email account on their advertising.

It doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad, but it’s an indication that whoever is running things just can’t be bothered to put in effort.

AI is fine for this… assuming we’re talking about a specifically trained machine learning model that is actually made to handle ATC and not just shoehorning an LLM into a job it was never intended to do.
