There is, but there’s no political will to spend it where it’s needed. The government’s spending limits are self imposed.

All the AI logos are.

That (64GB) doesn’t appear on the site at the moment.

Then retire. All the time people think it’s maintained it feels safe to not get involved.

Contributions are not enough. It needs people to maintain it. That means dedicating time long term. It’s not a small undertaking.
Contributions can be a step on the road though.

Mac Minis top out at 48GB and are 1.8k when configured like that. It’s going to be at least $2k to buy anything that has a hope of running it at a reasonable speed.
Running local isn’t free, but at least it’s just a single upfront payment.

The trouble with some of those projects (e.g. unison and sun thing) is that they don’t solve the same problem, not really.
A rewrite with modern tooling would be better done if it was incremental.

People pointing at new breakages are trying to say “No it isn’t and here’s the proof”.

I find that you feel less threatened by a corporation stunning.

I still find it interesting that people defend companies filming us the whole time. I’d be a lot happier if the response was “Yes, both are shitty. Let’s get rid of both”.

Read the thread. Already did that.

Pensions and other investments, yes.
Not current accounts which was what was at risk in 2008. When the bank goes bust you don’t just lose money. You become unable to do anything financial, like get paid.

Well that’s shady as fuck.

They’re very much not. They have high valuations, but very few employees. Very different to the banks (where the public would lose money) and the car firms (who employed large numbers of workers)

What happens when they go bust?

I’d have thought it would be an area where you could be viewed by the quality of what you do, and not anything else.
I might be being naive.
I hear Yani

Which project is that? Rsync?

Unfortunately “doing your part” is making the AI companies look like they have revenue just before IPO.
Firstly, Zig and Go are serious. Anybody who told you different isn’t a good person to learn from.
My journey was:
With some others thrown in I’m sure and some hardware description languages. The stuff I learnt in Basic 45 years ago is still relevant today. I learnt something from all of them. It doesn’t really matter where you start, but you have to take a first step and you need to write code to learn, even if it’s just copying it. It has to go through your fingers.
