I’ve mostly moved in the same sort of bubbles as OP (I think) and while it wasn’t super common, I definitely met people in that bubble, who had to be on the other side of the curve. I don’t have many funny stories about it; people struggling to keep up with their peers in competitive environments are more often sad or frustrating.

OK, there was one kinda funny thing where a PM at a household name tech company cornered me (an engineer with a math degree) to emphatically detail his “system” for craps. I tried so hard to explain why it’s impossible to have a “system” for predicting the outcome of dice rolls, he just wouldn’t hear it. I later told a friend about the encounter who replied “that ought to be a fireable offense”.

That wasn’t the dumbest thing that dude ever said nor the reason l flipped the bozo bit but it was the funniest.

To clarify , he was talking about playing in a casino and wasn’t talking about using altered dice or doing slight of hand where you’re not really throwing the dice.

So this dude is absolutely awful and deserves all the hate he’s getting but there was video of the beat down (lemme try and find it, one sec). It isn’t worth pressing charges because no one in Hawaii will ever convict the perpetrator. It would be political suicide for a prosecutor to even try to advance a case. I think a local politician (state senator? Mayor?) even commended the guy.

Total cost of employment is something like 140-160% of salary for a software dev. So my super handwavy half pulled out of my ass math puts it closer to 20 jr. engineers.

The classic dealer trap, “the first one is free”, it is clear that in five years AI companies will have ramped up the cost of using their models by a LOT.

It’s so obvious that this is going on but all the super geniuses running all the tech companies somehow believe that AI will magically get both better and cheaper and that the AI vendors will generously pass those savings on to their customers. People have been running this scam since Wonderbread was undercutting local bakeries but you can’t tell shit to an executive on a bubble high.

Did a double take to check if this was NotTheOnion. Honestly, Intuit is such a garbage company, hopefully this misstep will hamstring them financially so they stop lobbying against easy tax filing and slows them enough for viable Quickbooks contenders to get a foothold.

I don’t have 1st hand experience but I’ve seen in the news that UK businesses have been hit economically because imports and exports between the UK and the EU have more taxes and regulations. I’ve also seen news stories of British retirees in Spain shocked and appalled that they now need visas and may or may not qualify.

Maybe they should have made the effort to figure out what users actually want before shoving the half baked OS down everyone’s throats?

There is always a new poll with the “lowest numbers ever!!!” yet Trump seems to consistently have a ~40% approval rate. It’s beyond frustrating.

This one only focuses on economic sentiment and is sad (people are really struggling) but also encouraging because the struggle is hitting some of Trump’s hard 40% floor of support with the clue stick. Inflation has been hammering folks for years now but the gas prices may be what finally wakes the Tump supporters up 🤞🏾.

So much of this country has shitty public transportation (or none at all) and so many people live in suburbs or exurbs where there are no sidewalks and nothing is a reasonable walking distance, especially in the freezing winters or 100+ degree summers. Additionally, the people living in cities where you can get by without a car are less likely to be Trump supporters. It may be hopium but the gas prices are such an obvious own goal, I really think the clueless are starting to wake up.

Tax the extremely wealthy until they can’t afford to buy politicians. Don’t know how we get there when the wealthy already own all the politicians. But if people with too much money can’t be trusted to play well with others, taking away their money seems like the obvious solution.

I hope this ghoul sinks all of his money into this bubble and dies penniless. I know it won’t happen but a gal can dream.

He kinda started strong with trying to undo the toxic Ballmer era culture and scrambling to try to catch up on cloud infra. But even back then, the push for crazy excessive telemetry and moving pretty much all of QA into data science was the beginning of the end. And like all tech execs, AI has them losing their GD minds.

This brings me so much joy.

I’m gonna guess that you put a decent amount of time into figuring out a good set of smart home products and maybe even put some effort into looking up which products play well together and what configurations are ideal.

And that’s great if you enjoy shopping for, setting up and maintaining all those toys. But we all know there is too much shitty tech out there to think that it’s a good idea to grab a bunch of smart home stuff at Best Buy one afternoon and just plug it all in and call it good.

I think the thing is, folks in tech are less likely to be cool with, for example, exposing their door locks on the internet without doing a decent amount of due diligence. You have to want it enough to put in the work to make sure you have something that you can feel is secure, smooth operating and meets your personal privacy expectations. It kinda has to be a minor hobby. Which is cool if you happen to enjoy it or get enough joy from the result to make it worthwhile.

For me, I have enough hobbies and pastimes. I’ll put in the effort when the payoff is high, like for a home media server. But there’s no way in hell I’m signing up for future chores and headaches just so I can control my window curtains from my phone.
