I personally am against it. I think that a future socialist Spain would be stronger if it was unified, and division would threaten that. I also don’t think the arguments for seperation are that strong and the pro-independence movement is not just left wingers. I think like half of the movement are liberals, like Puigdemont.
But I’m not that well read in this topic so if you think otherwise I’m willing to listen
In general I think it weakens a bourgeois state and that is good. A independent breakaway state has better prospects for socialist governance and a nation that has had a secession would suffer a legitimacy set back that could make a successful socialist revolution more possible.
It also leaves it extremely vulnerable when surrounded by capitalist states with more money, weapons and power. Also to sanctions/embargo.
Spain right now is probably the most anti imperialist country in the EU right now (whatever that may mean) so breaking up Spain would harm that. I’m not sure how left wing the Catalan movement is these days. At least with Basque Country you can expect a mostly left wing independence movement.
Catalonia (and Euskal Herria) are the most important economic regions of Spain as well so a balkanization of Spain would have severe consequences on whatever nation that remains Spain.
Last I heard there was a significant—perhaps predominant—bourgeois faction in the Catalan separatist movement.
So they’re like Albertan separatists?
So long as Spain is in the EU this whole thing is a moot point. Catalonia would not achieve independence, it would simply go from being a province of Spain to a satrapy of Brussels. Until and unless the Catalan independence movement is an explicitly anti-EU movement dedicated to taking the region out of the grip of the EU and NATO, nothing substantial would change.
So i don’t care either way.
Now Scottish independence, that is something i do support. Breaking up the UK would be an unequivocally good thing regardless whether the movement doing it is left wing nationalist or right wing nationalist.
I’d also like to see a unified, independent Ireland.
That goes without saying. I don’t think there is a single communist who doesn’t. And i for one view it as an inevitability.
🙏🫡
JK Rowling also bankrolled the pro-unionist movement in Scotland because an independent Scotland would be too trans friendly.
It is pretty much guaranteed that the newly independent Catalonia would be incredibly nationalist, which would kill any socialist movements here, so I’m against it.
If the Spanish don’t want the balkanization of Spain, they should overthrow the bourgeois state.
I’m thinking like their independence depends on bourgeoisie movement than proletarian one. So, I’m against it.
It’s a right wing nationalist movement with the explicit intent of crashing Spain’s economy, so… bad, I guess.
It’s like Albertan, Bavarian and Padanian separatism - a bourgeois movement born from a resent of having to “shoulder” poorer parts of the country.
