Sad. I could never understand how it feels to be persecuted for my sexual orientation. Parts of Africa must be the one of the worst places in the world to be gay (after most Arab countries). You could literally put all gay people on Mars, but there would still be horrible arseholes who would complain the solar system is being “infested”. Why cant we all just get along? Ahh yes, fragile male egos and orthodox religious beliefs.

      Most of Africa.

In Niger it’s straight up medieval. Hard line conservatives moved in once Sharia hit northern Nigeria, and from the early 2000s to 2010 it changed dramatically. Source: lived there for years. Even affluent gay artists in Niamey with French/EU/US cover denied their sexuality to all but their closest friends. Anything less was a liability. Most did everything they could to leave the region and get to Europe. Once the junta kicked the French out, the easiest safe path went with them.

Even Ghana is bad lately. They buried the country’s only skate park in sand because it was “introducing gay stuff to the youth.” Laughably stupid, and that was the punt from years of trying to implement a fully draconian anti-LGBT law. There it’s easier to blend into Western-friendly parts of Accra, but it was going to end up fucking being hunting parties if that law passed. Source: same as above.

Plenty of other countries literally hunt people down on a rumor. Once saw a police freak out in a SADC county and literal (wo)manhunt based on a couple posting a FB pic of two women at a restaurant.

South Africa might be the only LGBT tolerant county really on the whole continent.

Look at the number of republican gay legislators who pass antigay legislation. Some people are just wired to hurt others.

The reasons are far more sinister than someone’s ego. People (not just males) do these things to gain/stay in power or similar gains (monetary, followers, …).

Not individual people, really. It’s the capital owning class, that tries to push bigotry to protect their own power.

There is no secret group of rich people voting what to do next. Individual assholes is all it takes. Also, people doing this do not need to be wealthy at all. This is often a way into power.
