Fox News and the entire GOP is so terrified of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s success that they are mocking him for asking New Yorkers to be careful with their thermostats during an extreme heat wave. This is the same advice Trump’s Energy Department has suggested as well.

Not only do they look foolish, but they appear desperate in their efforts to smear and ridicule a popular political rival.

This morning on Fox and Friends, the three co-hosts were beside themselves that the mayor of New York City would ask residents to turn the thermostat higher to conserve energy so that there aren’t any blackouts during this massive heat wave.

Jimmy Carter asked the nation to turn down thermostats ~50 years ago, and these people are still freaking out about it.

Carter was promptly voted out of office and replaced with Ronald Reagan. We all know how that went.

It might have had something to do with Carter putting solar panels on the White House roof as well. Or the backroom deal that Reagan’s people made with the Khomeini regime to keep the American hostages in captivity until after the election. Who knows.

I still hold that that was treason and should have been tried as such, but we only ever try people that attempt to make America better for treason

I think Carter was simply out-charisma’d by Reagan. The televised debates had a clear winner (on presentation, not policy).

Well, common sense and calling for sustainable consumption are just not very sexy. Voters preferred the charismatic actor from Hollywood to the pragmatic farmer from Iowa, and that got all of us into this current mess.

Maybe the United States needs more politicians like Mamdani who combine no-nonsense progressive realpolitik with populist messaging.

There’s a quote about Carter from early SImpsons: “He’s history’s worst monster!”

On the commentary track, one writer said, “It’s a joke about how overblown the hatred of Carter is,” and another writer said, “No, I meant it sincerely.”
