Lots of terrible stuff was done by the west/USA, or because of it. These countries you listed are in some ways much worse for their own people than the US is for americans, but mostly don’t terrorize other countries. I think you grossly underestimate the amount of people murdered by US and its allies’ bombs compared to those murdered by their own authoritarian governments.

When you learn about all the horrendous monstrosities some of the goverments do, it’s easy to just dismiss any critique of the West, because at least they are not this evil.

Well, I think the tankies have it just like that, just reversed. When they learned about all the tens of thousands (probably more? idk) innocent people and little kids murdered by the USA in all those countries all in the recent history, and none of our “civilized” countries doing anything about it, they just support any regime that opposes the US, because at least it’s not this evil.

If you have the world mostly divided into two camps, it’s very depressing to acknowledge how evil both are. If you see one’s atrocities first, it’s easy to dismiss the other’s due to it.

Now, some tankies are more fanatical than others, but many of them are similar to liberals supporting the US. They don’t deny some of the flaws of china for example, but they still support it over the US, for obvious reasons. The US supporters also don’t deny some of the war crimes and atrocities, especially after a few years since they happened, but they never see the big picture. They see individual mistakes excusable by the perceived evilness of the enemy.

maybe show some evidence? otherwise you are just wasting people’s time. you probably read that somewhere, no? if so, whoever said so should have provided evidence. if they didn’t, it’s better to ask them to do so than to post here without context.

I had an argument with the user posting the Jago comics, and I have two things to add here:

1. Even when many users presumably blocked them, there’s still a lot more downvotes than upvotes on most of the Jago comics they posts. Thus it’s actually a majority, if there isn’t something I overlooked.

2. If we asume that a) majority of people don’t like these comics and b) they will all eventually block them, it will be really bad for any new user. What will any average new user see is a bunch of comics they don’t like, with almost only upvotes (since users who blocked the poster don’t downvote it)

I think that’s gonna drive new users away, and it’s a reason why I wouldn’t promote Lemmy to my friends for example.

By banning people from posting if the majority doesn’t want to see what they are posting. If I was in the minority of downvoters I would simply block you.

But if I were to invite people to Lemmy now, it would go like: “it’s amazing but there are a few people posting bad stuff every day and you have to manually block them to make the place enjoyable”

It’s not just me, it’s objectively the majority. And that’s excluding people who blocked you and thus don’t downvote you.

You act like you have some undeniable right to post whatever you want if it doesn’t break the rules directly, but you seem to forgot that the rules are there to make the community enjoyable.

While that might be the case in some communities, I don’t think it is in this one. People look at comics because they like them, and downvote comics they don’t.

And I don’t think votes are unpredictable either. When OP goes to post comic from this transphobic and sexist author, they know very well it will be downvoted.

I’m not saying we should delete everything with downvotes, but this is clearly a case of deliberately posting content while knowing the community will not enjoy it.

Reddit solves this with karma. Getting downvoted is a punisment, and so OP wouldn’t keep posting these comics to not ruin his karma entirely (which might even prevent him from posting and commenting in many subreddits).

The karma system has its own problems and I’m glad Lemmy doesn’t have it, but it also means we need to solve this another way.

Downvotes are a way of the community to show dislike for some content. People who don’t like it will eventually moderate it for themselves by blocking OP, but any new user will still see it. I don’t think that’s a good way to run a community. Reddit has karma for that, while Lemmy doesn’t and should deal with it via moderation IMO.

It’s only one person constantly posting them, and they know very well. I don’t know why aren’t they banned already. All of their posts get downvoted to hell.
