I haven’t been watching much in terms of actual shows for a good while, then while listening to a podcast a host casually mentioned they had rewatched Chernobyl, how it still holds up, that there’s a reason it got as much acclaim as it did, etc. So I thought I’d give it a go and wow, loved it (still one episode left to watch).

Had me thinking, what else have I missed out on? What are some “absolute cinema” TV shows that still hold up and and are considered must watch?

I always feel like The Leftovers on HBO doesn’t get anywhere near enough love. The first few episodes, while still good, are admittedly a bit slow (even for a slow burn) but holy shit once it gets going it is SO damn good. 3 seasons of some of my absolute favorite “what-the-fuck-is-happening” television. The story and writing and characters are phenomenal, and the acting is even better. Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston, and Ann Dowd are just incredible, and Damon Fucking Lindelof just ties it all together

Has one of the most terrifying episodes of a mainstream television show in it. Iykyk

I wouldn’t say this is perfect but it’s very unique with some meaty performances and it does finish cleanly

Yes! It was relatively short as HBO dramatic series go, but it packed so much into its run and it had a really clear arc.

Peak “prestige television” from HBO, in my opinion.

Ah there it is :) I was scrolling down to mention it if no one did, fantastic show one of my all time favs. The scene where he’s singing Simon and Garfunkel in the other place makes me tear up just thinking about it

Fuuuuck that scene is so good. The raw emotion he channels is ridiculous. I added Homeward Bound to my playlist because of that scene, and while the actual version is damn good, in my mind I hear Kevin Garvey Harvey every time it plays

Right? I’ve been a huge fan of Justin Theroux since and honestly he hasn’t let me down, you’re right though the whole cast is just impeccable
