  • I would rather have them held accountable in the same way that any news outlet or publisher would be held accountable for publishing false information that could have deadly consequences.

It’s only a matter of time before a fifth-grader follows some inane advice because it was the first result from Google and is irreversibly maimed because of it.

Where are all the Helen Lovejoy types when we can actually use them?

  • That was such a trend at a previous job that I started responding to my supervisor’s requests in writing with, “I am currently working on X with a deadline of Y. You have asked me to pivot to Z today. Whatever time I divert to (new request) Z will directly affect delivery on X. Please confirm the order of priority for X and Z.”

If the supervisor’s confirmation was verbal, I would reply with, “Per our conversation, I am <whatever I was told to do>.”

At least then I had receipts in the meeting about why X was behind schedule.

  • When I was an undergrad in the late '90s, I got a clerical job in the facilities management (FM) department.

The president of the university had a fleet vehicle as a perk of his job. It was a very nice car that was donated by a local car dealer but since it technically belonged to the university, all maintenance was handled through FM.

Late '90s meant that the stereo had a 5-disc CD changer. And the president’s most frequent complaint about the car was that the stereo didn’t work. Every single time he had that complaint, it was because there were at least two extra CDs stuck in the changer.

You had to really force it to get extra CDs in those things. And that happened at least half a dozen times that I know of.
