I would love to have a calm, rational conversation about China with someone who knows more about it than I do. This thread isn’t going to be the place for that. Can you recommend a community on Lemmy for learning about the Chinese political system, life in China, and specifically how socialism with chinese characteristics differs from other western ideas on the topic?

As a communist, and one from the US, the idea that billionaires can exist but are incapable of influencing the political sphere just… Does not compute for me. And while I do not expect to change my position to the point where I’m okay with billionaires existing, I am willing to learn. I did not understand Cuban democracy until I did.

Thelema has always been super fascinating to me. I’d love to learn more if you have resources to direct me towards. There’s actually a Lemmy server specifically for religions. I started one over there for Episcopalians, but it’s been so long I’ll have to dig up the info on it as I don’t remember the sever name. Philosophy and religions subs are the thing I miss most from the other site

My sister converter to the faith in like 2007, I think? She was always a-political, like to the point of not really having paid attention whatsoever from my understanding (we did not grow up together). While she is still a member officially, and religiously believes, she has left the state of Utah, left the church, no longer attends, and her and her husband don’t really associate with any other mormons after 2016. The hatefulness of Trump being supported by her community really upset her and she had to leave. The final nail in the coffin, the thing that spurred her to get genuinely politically active, was Israel/Gaza. Now I don’t think the church would take her back if she begged. Not that she would. Lol

Used to work security, and one time during our CPR/AED training, this dude, we’ll call him Officer Dumbfuck, kept asking dumbass questions. We’re talking, like, “if a person is pregnant and too large to get my hands around for a heimlich, can I just punch them?” And “if there’s no AED available, should we just shock them with like some wires plugged into a socket?”

Which, I mean, good thing he asked instead of doing that shit… But yeah. Officer Dumbfuck was a dumb fuck. Our entire training was supposed to be around 2 hours. We were there for 6. The instructor barely would get two or three sentences in before Officer Dumbfuck came in with another dumb as fuck question.

Finally, by the end, the instructor is visible upset, everyone there is stressed as fuck and we all just want to leave.

Instructor: okay. Well. I think we have covered every possible thing. So if we’re done here, I’m going to get home.

Me: excitedly actually I have a question!

Entire class: exhales enough to change the humidity in the room

Instructor: defeated, exhausted … Yes?

Me: nah I’m just screwing with y’all. See ya next year!
